The beginning of August in the Celtic calendar marks Lughnasadh one of the four major Gaelic seasonal festivals. Celebrated around August 1st, it is a cross-quarter day falling exactly halfway between the summer solstice and the autumn equinox. It officially signifies the start of the harvest season and the beginning of autumn.
Rooted in ancient agricultural and spiritual traditions, Lughnasadh translates literally to the “Assembly of Lugh,” honoring the Celtic god of light, craftsmanship, and the sun.
This time of year was celebrated with community gatherings, athletic contests, feasting, and the offering of the “first fruits” of the harvest. People would climb hills or visit bodies of water to give thanks for the earth’s abundance, pick seasonal berries, and gather with loved ones.
Modern celebrations retain these themes of gratitude, feasting, and honoring the changing of the seasons.
Please join me for this day of celebration and connection to nature and the changing of the seasons.
